Michael Novotny (Hal Sparks), also known as Mikey, is the adorable, friendly, boy-next-door character on the television series Queer As Folk. He is also probably the most laid-back and down-to-earth character on the show; it would be impossible not to like him.
Inside Michael, as Ben (Robert Gant) pointed out once, beats the heart of a superhero. Michael is compassionate and warm-hearted, always making sure his friends are happy. He has a soft spot for his mother, Debbie (Sharon Gless), and goes to endless lengths to make sure she is not overworking herself. He puts up with Brian (Gale Harold) and takes the time to listen and understand him; no one is more accepting of Brian than Mikey. In addition, Michael can be naive but he is very open-minded; he realizes taking risks and making sacrifices are sometimes necessary, like dating someone who is HIV positive.
No matter what, a character like Michael Novotny will grow on you. His obession with comic books and The Flash and Captain Astro is sweet. There is something unmistakably playful about Hal's character, offering him an isolated youth. He will always be young at heart and that is one of the qualities that makes him so loveable.
