Biography

Cute, quirky red-haired actress Lauren Ambrose was born in New Haven, Connecticut on November 16, 1978. Her father, Frank, is a caterer, and her mother, Annie, is an interior designer. She also has a younger brother named John. Lauren graduated from the High School in the Community in New Haven; she is also a classically trained opera singer who took voice lessons at the prestigious Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox, Massachusetts.

Lauren's acting career started with stage and television work in New York. She made her New York stage debut at the age of 14 in the Vineyard Theatre's production of "Soulful Scream of a Chosen Son" . During her teenage years, she was involved with off-Broadway theater companies such as EST and Naked Angels.

She moved to Los Angeles at the age of 18. Her feature film debut was in the ambiguously-gay comedy In and Out, in which she played a gifted student in the high school class taught by Kevin Kline's character.

Her next role was the reclusive, cynical Denise in Can't Hardly Wait, a teen comedy in which her character spent most of the movie locked in a bathroom with Seth Green's. After this teen hit, she began focusing on independent features, taking starring roles in two films: Swimming, in which she played a shy tomboy spending her summer at the seashore; and Psycho Beach Party (2000), a campy send-up of 60's beach-blanket movies which allowed her to do some singing as part of her role as a schizophrenic "surfer chick."

What could be considered her breakthrough role came in HBO's original series Six Feet Under, which began airing in 2001. As the often strung-out Claire, the younger sister in a family who runs a funeral home, Lauren delivers a powerful performance every week as a young woman torn between home life, sex and drugs.

Lauren is currently living in Los Angeles and is married to Internet entrepreneur Sam Handel.

There is no denying Lauren's acting talent, range, and her ability to elicit an emotional response from an audience. Her future is filled with many more challenging roles as she continues to develop as a star.
